Hand Lettering Series Part 5 - Bounce Lettering

Bounce lettering is one of the easiest ways to add some extra style to your hand lettered projects. There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to creating bounce lettering, so that's what I'll be going over in this post in the Hand Lettering Series. Let's get into bounce lettering...

When you get to this stage in your lettering journey; you've learned the rules and practiced them until they've become second nature, you can begin to break those rules to create lettering with a bit more style. That's what bounce lettering is: breaking the rules of lettering, but in a methodical way. Since it is a methodical way of breaking those hand lettering rules, there is still a set of somewhat loose guidelines to follow... and also break those when necessary, to create the best design. Now, that may all sound a little fickle, but I guess it kind of can be, and that's why, in the end, you will end up with a style of bouncing letters that is your own. I will explain all this, and more, in the video tutorial below:

PRINTABLE WORKSHEETS - BOUNCE LETTERING

Click the link below for some helpful worksheets for bounce lettering. These worksheets will help you get a feel for bouncing your letters, but it'll be more helpful to practice different random words you think of. Use the guidelines in the video to create bounce with visual balance. I've also provided a blank sheet with the line structure included to practice bouncing random words!

When downloading the worksheets you will be brought to a screen that has a list of all the files (worksheets) in the folder - just click the download icon (looks like an arrow pointing down to a horizontal line) in the upper right corner of the screen. If you get an error that reads "Whoops! There was a problem with the preview." you'll still see a download icon directly below that message, click on that! I believe you will also have the option to print the sheet directly from that screen (printer icon to left of download icon) if you'd rather not download it at all and just print it instead.

RECOMMENDED TOOLS

Some of these tools in this list I use in this video, some I may use in other videos in this series, and some I recommend as additional options you may like for practicing your lettering, but all are tools that I do like. You definitely don't have to buy all of them, and I've listed similar tools of different brands and price points for you to decide what you feel you might like best. You will need at least one type of brush pen, one type of paper, and if you use water brushes rather than brush markers, you'll need to choose between inks or watercolours for your pigment. Obviously, you can try as many tools as you like to figure out what you prefer; you may like something different than I do.
