Hand Lettering Series - Part #2 - Terminology & Basic Caps

It's taken me some time to get this tutorial up for you all; it didn't happen on purpose, it just happened! I apologize, and I am super excited to (finally) have Hand Lettering Series Part #2 for you all today! In this post you'll begin to learn a bit of terminology and a few of the lines that make up the structure for your hand lettering, and you'll learn a very basic version of hand lettered capitals! If you haven't seen my first post in this series, Modern Hand Lettering Part #1 - Basic Drills, I recommend that you head over to that post and practice what I presented in that tutorial first. And if you are brand new to hand lettering or brush lettering, I definitely recommend that you start with my Faux Calligraphy post before tackling this series; that's really the prefect place to begin learning how to do hand lettering! By the end of this series, you'll be in your way to creating your very own hand lettered designs!

As I mentioned above, we will touch on line structure in this tutorial. We will only learn what we need in order to learn the basic hand lettered capital letters that I will also be teaching you in this video. Keep in mind that the capital letters I teach you in this tutorial are only one version that you can learn. There are many other versions of basic capital letters in hand lettering, but the principles are basically the same. And please, as I say in the video, this may seem very simple, and perhaps even boring, but each letter becomes a drill, adding to the basic drills you learned in Part #1, further preparing you for when we get to the script style hand lettering in Part #3. Additionally, you will see this simple style of hand lettered caps used in many designs in combination with those script style brush lettering styles. The combination of script styles with block styles provides contrast, and therefore visual interest. Though they seem very simple, they do take a little practice, especially for certain letters. So do practice them as you have the basic drills from Part #1.

As with Part #1, and with all future posts in this hand lettering series, I have prepared worksheets for you if you wish to use them. You can find those just below the video tutorial, along with some other recommended tools that may come in handy throughout this series, and in your hand lettering journey!

PRINTABLE BASIC CAPS WORKSHEETS

I've given you all the option to download the worksheets individually or all together. To download them click on one of the links below. If you're downloading all the worksheets at once you will be brought to a screen that has a list of all the files (worksheets) in the folder - just click the download icon (looks like an arrow pointing down to a horizontal line) in the upper right corner of the screen. If you get an error that reads "Whoops! There was a problem with the preview." you'll still see a download icon directly below that message, click on that! If you're going with the individual sheet downloads, you'll see a preview of the worksheet, just click the download icon to download that worksheet. I believe you will also have the option to print the sheet directly from that screen (printer icon to left of download icon) if you'd rather not download it at all.

RECOMMENDED TOOLS

Some of these tools in this list I use in this video, some I may use in future videos in this series, and some I recommend as additional options you may like for practicing your lettering, but all are tools that I do like, and are great for beginners and as you get better and better as well. You definitely don't have to buy all of them and I've listed similar tools of different brands and prices for you to decide what you feel you'd like best. You will need at least one type of brush pen, one type of paper, and if you use water brushes rather than markers, you'll need to choose between inks or watercolours for your pigment. Obviously you can try as many tools as you like to find what you prefer; you may like something different than I do.
