Building a drawer doesn't have to be really difficult or necessitate special, complicated techniques! If you want to learn how to DIY a Basic Drawer, I'll teach you one method in this post - keep reading...
When I was building the chevron coffee table I designed, I decided that showing how I built my drawers as a separate tutorial would be helpful to people who have their own ideas in mind for a project, but really want to add drawers to them. This can be one of the most daunting parts of building furniture, but it doesn't have to be as hard as learning how to do special joinery techniques. It's really as simple as building a box using pocket holes and attaching a drawer face! Still sound like gibberish? Then let's take a look at the supplies and video tutorial!
WOOD & TOOLS LIST

DRAWER SIZE in the video - Frame is 16" deep x 11.5" wide & Face is (12-7/8" wide) x (5-1/2") tall
** I have listed everything I USED; your drawers will likely be different dimensions than mine, so you will need to think about that when purchasing YOUR wood. Just make sure to stick will 1" thick board (actual thickness is 3/4" when measured) and these directions will work for you! **
WOOD PURCHASE (per drawer)
- (1) 1 x 4 x 6 pine board (longer/more if your drawer will be larger than in the video)
- (1) 1 x 6 x 4 pine board (longer if your drawer is wider than in the video)
- (1) 1/8" Masonite Board (or hardboard)
TOOLS NEEDED
- Pocket Hole Jig (starter kit with drill bit and driver bit, I used this one - Canada Link http://bit.ly/2hQT23f || US Link http://go.magik.ly/ml/7tbo/ )
- Drill
- Wood Drill Bits
- Measuring Tape
- Mitre Saw/Chop Saw (or get wood cut at hardware store)
- Roberston Head (square) screwdriver or driver bit
- Table Saw (UNLESS you will be attaching wood cleats to hold your drawer bottom, see video for details)
- Sanding block
- Clamps
- Speed Square (optional)
OTHER SUPPLIES NEEDED
- 1-1/4" Coarse-Thread Pocket Hole Screws (for softwoods)
- 1-1/4" Wood Screws (4 needed per drawer)
- Drawer Slides (if you're going to be using them)
- Sandpaper
- Pencil
- Finishing Nails & Wood Glue (if you'll be attaching wood cleats, see video for details)
WOOD CUTTING LIST (per drawer)

- From your 1 x 4 x 6 -- cut 2 SIDE pieces of equal lengths. This will be the depth of your drawer. This should be 1/2" from touching the back of the furniture when drawer is pushed in. I cut mine to 16".
- From your 1 x 4 x 6 -- cut a FRONT and a BACK piece of equal length. REMEMBER front and back pieces will fit BETWEEN side pieces!!! I cut mine to 10-1/2".
- From your 1 x 6 x 4 -- cut a drawer FACE piece that will be the width of your drawer hole MINUS 1/6" from each side (or 1/8" total from the width). Some final sanding might be needed so it slides in and out smoothly without touching. I cut mine to 12-7/8".
That's it for this post, friends! My DIY Chevron Coffee Table Tutorial is now up here on the blog! I hope I explained everything well enough in this post and the video, and if you do have any questions on this one, don't hesitant to leave a message in the comments!
